Artist’s date
I went to “Light Ripples” by Hannah Gason and “Sequence of Variables” by Estelle Briedis, a pair of exhibitions at Craft+Design Canberra (which is in the same building as the Canberra Museum and Gallery but has a different entrance).
Reflections
The theme of Week 5 is “Recovering a Sense of Possibility”.
One of the tasks instructs us to be honest about our favourite activities that get in the way of creativity. The list of possibilities is broad: some obvious ones such as watching television and some less obvious ones such as helping other people.
The word ‘favourite’ here is interesting. It leads to a follow-up question about why this activity is the favourite: is it fulfilling a need, or is it providing a convincing excuse?
A favourite activity could be something that seems connected to our creative goals but doesn’t actually help achieve them. This is related to the idea of the ‘shadow artist’ (mentioned in Chapter 1 of The Artist’s Way), who end up working in fields connected to arts while avoiding following their own artistic dreams.
(I enjoy reading about creativity … but it’s possible that this could be – or could eventually become – one of these favourite activities that form creative blocks. If I write up reflections on what I’ve learned from my reading and share them with others, that counts as something creative… doesn’t it?)
