“The Artist’s Way” diary: introduction

The Artist’s Way is a bestselling book by Julia Cameron. According to the blurb, it “provides a twelve-week course that guides you through the process of recovering your creative self”.

The idea of writing an online journal while working through the course is certainly not new! But – given how well-known the book is – I thought it would be good to follow this trend early on in my experiments with testing creativity advice.

For this diary, I’m not planning on writing comprehensive reports. Instead, I’ll post a few reflections on the exercises or something else related to each week of the course.

One of the tools in the book is the weekly Artist’s Date, which is a block of time devoted to a solitary excursion designed to engage or nurture the creative aspects of your personality. For the artist’s dates, I’m aiming to go to places in my home city (Canberra) that I haven’t seen before or visit temporary exhibitions, without spending money apart from bus fares.
