“Walking in this World” diary: week 1

Artist’s Date

For the first week of this course, I visited an exhibition called “Visible But Intangible” at the Megalo Print Studio. (For Canberra locals: this is in the building where the Old Bus Depot Markets are held.) This was a group exhibition by print-making artists based in Sydney, and it was interesting to see the variety of styles and themes presented in the same medium.

Reflections

The theme for week 1 is “Discovering a Sense of Origin”.  (All the titles for the weeks of the course in The Artist’s Way begin with the word “Recovering”.  Now, in this book, the word is “Discovering”.  Perhaps this reflects outward-moving, exploratory goals.)

One of the tasks for this week is to make a list of twenty small creative actions that we could take. Choosing one and doing it can help us escape from feeling creatively stuck, even if the small creative action we end up taking doesn’t have a direct connection with any projects we’re trying to work on.

I’ve been reading a few books on improvisation recently, and the list of small creative actions seems similar to the concept of “offers”. But instead of being given to us by other people, the small creative actions are being suggested by a part of ourselves that isn’t focused on current projects. Accepting one or more of these offers can still break us out of routine, although perhaps just in a minor way.
